Sycamore Middle School (SMS) celebrated its annual Red Ribbon Week for alcohol and drug awareness during the last week in October. This year's Red Ribbon theme was Love yourself. Be drug free.

SMS sponsored five dress up days:
  • Monday: Students wore red to "Say 'Yes' to a Healthy Heart and Body."
  • Tuesday: Students wore camouflage to "Join the Fight against Drugs."
  • Wednesday: Red, white, & blue was prevalent on campus as students celebrated the theme of "United we Stand."
  • Thursday: Students "put a cap on drugs" with hat day.
  • Friday: Students wore college-themed shirts and were reminded that "Smart People Don't Do Drugs."

Students competed against their peers each day in a trivia game, which focused on alcohol and drug abuse. Faculty and staff also competed in a door-decorating contest to vie for the best homeroom door that illustrated the theme of Love yourself. Be drug free.

Eighth grade dedicated an entire wall to their students with 8x10 pictures of each child complete with what each eighth grader liked about him or herself and why they would not choose to take drugs. The SMS Lifeskills class got on board with encouraging the student body to take the pledge to be drug free by painting their hands red and stamping them on the pledge wall.

The National Family Partnership (NFP) organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign. NFP provides drug awareness by sponsoring the annual National Red Ribbon Celebration. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.
