Ashland City Elementary School hosted a Community Partner Meet & Greet on Thursday, Nov. 29 for Cheatham County businesses and organizations to learn more about the school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) program.

Teacher Kristin McQueen spearheaded the event, which featured information about the program, student presentations and a school tour.

ACES is in the process of earning the Tennessee STEM School Designation.

This designation, developed in collaboration with the STEM Leadership Council and the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, is designed to recognize schools that promote and implement rigorous STEM-related learning opportunities for all students.

Currently, 15 schools in the state have obtained the designation.

If any business or organization is interested in becoming a partner with ACES STEAM program, contact McQueen at kristin.mcqueen@ccstn.org or call the school at 615-792-4296.

The Cheatham County School District has started offering art classes in the elementary schools.

This initiative is part of the district’s five-year plan.

At Ashland City Elementary School, Dora Haggard volunteers one day a week to lead art classes.

Haggard retired from ACES in 2017 after 34 years at the school.

Haggard said she’s glad to be back at ACES to work with the students.

The district is still seeking community volunteers to enhance and expose our elementary students to all forms of art.

If you are interested in leading a class, please contact Emily Staggs at emily.staggs@ccstn.org or 615-746-1433.

Cheatham County Schools participated in a contest to raise money to benefit the Area 29 Special Olympics.

The southern cluster schools dominated this competition with Pegram Elementary School raising $30, Harpeth Middle School raising 168.50, Harpeth High School raising $1,208 and Kingston Springs Elementary School being the big winner with $1,407.

A big thank you goes to the schools who participated as well as to our amazing community who supported and continues to support the mission of Special Olympics.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

All schools are currently in the process of selling gourmet salts, bath salts and locally made maple syrup to help fund the Area 29 Special Olympics.

Ask your local school for a copy of the order form or call to place an order. Orders will be taken through Dec. 15.

For more information on how to become involved with Special Olympics or to make a monetary donation, contact Jen Copeland at 615-426-4548.

Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes four Cheatham County students

There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example — in the classroom, on the field and within the community.

The Wendy’s High School Heisman program recognizes four Cheatham County seniors – Ashley Garrett and Triston Hampton of Sycamore High School, Mallory Anderson of Cheatham County Central High School and Win Seagraves of Harpeth High School – by naming them school winners.

From a total applicant pool of nearly 42,000 high school scholar-athletes graduating with the class of 2019, more than 7,500 were named school winners in Wendy’s annual scholarship program.

The Wendy's High School Heisman was created by Wendy's founder Dave Thomas in 1994.

Since 1994, Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust have been running the same play to perfection: honoring more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed students who share Wendy's values of giving back to their communities, treating people with respect, continuing education and excelling on the athletic field.
