Billie Ann McBride, an eighth-grade U.S. history teacher at Sycamore Middle School, will participate in three professional development programs this summer.

She was selected to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Workshop for Teachers, “Social Movements and Reform in Industrializing America: The Lowell Experience,” July 13-19 at the Lowell National Historical Park in Lowell, Mass.

Participants will explore changes in work, society, culture and the environment between 1820 and 1860 as well as subsequent reform activity related to labor, women’s rights and slavery.

McBride will participate in the White House History Teacher Institute in Washington, D.C., July 22-26. The institute is sponsored by The White House Historical Association.

Through this experience, she will visit historic sites, be introduced to new education resources and technology and given opportunities to learn about White House history from White House historians and former White House staff.

McBride will also attend the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Williamsburg, Va. June 22-29.

The institute helps prepare educators to help students meet national and state history standards through hands-on immersion experiences in colonial history.

McBride was named the 2018-2019 SMS Teacher of the Year and District-Wide Middle School Teacher of the Year.

The Cheatham County School District has named Steve Dodd as the new Sycamore High School boys basketball coach.

Dodd, who has coached for nearly 40 years, comes to Sycamore after serving as the boys basketball coach at Hillwood High School from 2008 to 2019.

He replaces Toby Miles, who recently resigned after leading the War Eagles for the past six years.

Before joining Hillwood, Dodd was the boys basketball coach at Russell High School in Russell, Ky., from 2002 to 2008 and the men’s head basketball coach at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky., from 1998 to 2002.

Additionally, he coached on the collegiate level at Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia, Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma and Bethel College in Tennessee.

He was also a member of the USA basketball coaching staff for the World University Games in 1999 and is a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Lipscomb University and a master’s degree in Health Science from Austin Peay State University.

“I am proud to be named the head boys basketball coach at Sycamore High School, and I am very happy to become a part of the Sycamore family. I am looking forward to working with the War Eagle team and community,” Dodd said.

Middle, high school band programs get more funding

6/13/2019

Thanks to the support of the Cheatham County Commission, we are excited to announce that our middle and high school band programs will see a significant boost in their funding in the 2019-2020 school year.

Each middle school will receive $8,000 and each high school will receive $17,000.

The commission approved the money via the education debt service fund and not the general operating budget.

As you might recall, the district made the difficult decision to reduce the band program funding in the 2018-2019 budget so we are appreciative of the County Commission’s commitment to our music programs.

When you see your commissioner, please thank them for their support of our students.

We have some exciting news to share!

East Cheatham Elementary School has been selected to receive the 2018-2019 Exemplary Reading Program Award by the International Literacy Association.

The school received the prestigious national award through the support of the Cheatham County Literacy Council.

The award will be presented at the association’s conference in October in New Orleans.

Retired Cheatham County educator and Cheatham County Literacy Council member Mallory Lemley set the stage for ECES to receive the award.

Lemley, who taught at ECES before she retired, received a Retired Teachers Response Team grant from the International Literacy Association.

The grant allowed the Cheatham County Literacy Council to continue the successful Retired Teachers Response Team program at the school. As a result, this program met the requirements for the Exemplary Reading Program Award.
