The weekend flood hit the Cheatham County School District’s bus garage on Thompson Road in Ashland City.

Transportation Director Cal Blacker made a great decision last week to move school buses and equipment to various locations and out of harm’s way. As a result, no equipment was lost.

The district would like to recognize several people for their hard work in evacuating the bus garage: Assistant Transportation Director Jeff Hobbs, bus shop supervisor David Cuff, bus garage employee Cordero Ross-Green and bus drivers Ashley Thomason, Amanda Standley, Angela Dorris, Kathy Binkley, Bud Prentice, Donna Prentice, Anissa Owen, Matt Chandler, Linda Chandler, Elizabeth Ramirez and Beverly Cobb.

The district also appreciates the following for their help during the flooding: Dillon Trucking, Bowman's, Nashville Wrecker Service, Cheatham County Sheriff Mike Breedlove, Cheatham County EMA Director Edwin Hogan, Cheatham County Road Superintendent Robert Hester and the county’s Road Department.

Additionally, the district thanks Cheatham County Mayor Kerry McCarver for allowing us to park equipment at the Sycamore Square Shopping Center.

Jackson Earle, a seventh-grader at Sycamore Middle School, has been awarded a full academic scholarship to attend the Space Camp Robotics Academy at The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Jackson was in competition with applicants from all over the world.

He had to submit two essays and design a mission patch. He designed and performed a science project based on how airplane wing performance varies by the choice of materials of which they are constructed.

He was also required to submit standardized test scores, school grades and letters of recommendation from teachers and administrators.

His teachers were all very supportive in the process. He is especially thankful for their efforts.
