PictureRead to be Ready summer reading camps will be held at ACES, ECES and KSES in the summer of 2018.
The Cheatham County School District has been awarded an $85,800 grant through the 2018 Read to be Ready Summer Grant program.

The program funds tuition-free, month-long literacy-focused summer camps that target rising first, second and third graders who are in need during the critical summer months.

The grant will allow the district to provide camps at three schools – Ashland City Elementary, East Cheatham Elementary and Kingston Springs Elementary.

The camps will run from June 4-29.

“We are excited about this opportunity to help strengthen and improve the academic needs of our students,” said Director of Schools Dr. Cathy Beck. “This is the second consecutive year the district has been awarded a Read to be Ready grant. The district hosted three successful camps in 2017, and we were able to serve 135 students. Those students took home a multitude of books, received individual instruction to improve their reading and writing skills and engaged in numerous enrichment activities.”

This year’s camps will provide students with access to at least 80 hours of literacy-focused instruction and enrichment, including field trips, during the summer.

Students selected to participate in the camps will be contacted by the district, and Family Nights will be held at each school in the spring to introduce the camps to their families.

Statewide, more than 7,700 students will benefit from the 2018 Read to be Ready Summer Grant program. In total, the Tennessee Department of Education awarded $8,860,000 to 203 grant recipients throughout the state.

Read to be Ready is a coordinated campaign launched by Governor Bill Haslam, First Lady Crissy Haslam and Commissioner Candice McQueen in February 2016 with the goal to increase third-grade reading proficiency in Tennessee to 75 percent by 2025 through a variety of initiatives.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of reading, unite efforts to address low reading achievement, highlight best practices, and build partnerships.

The Cheatham County School District’s Pre-K program is building a brighter future.

The program offers a high-quality experience for at-risk four-year-old students.

A variety of activities are offered to develop a student’s thinking, language, physical and social-emotional skills. Technology is also a big part of the program as there are 9 iPads and three computers in every room.

In Pre-K, the district gives a five-year-old Brigance test in the fall and again in the spring, and our students are showing much progress when compared to their peers.

The district has Pre-K programs at four elementary schools: Ashland City, East Cheatham, Pegram and West Cheatham.
Pre-K supervisor Emily Staggs highlighted the program’s success at the Dec. 4 Cheatham County School Board meeting.

The Pre-K teachers, assistants and administrative assistant Gena Batts were recognized at the meeting.

Dr. Beth Batson, Supervisor of Human Resources, Student Services and Policy for the Cheatham County School District, has completed all requirements and graduated from the Tennessee School Board Association’s Aspiring Superintendents Academy.

Dr. Batson presented her final project on Dec. 1 about recruitment and retention of teachers in a rural school district.

Her findings will be a major part of the school district’s Five-Year Plan’s Human Resources strand that will roll out over the next few months.

The distinguished panel, comprised of former school superintendents, was impressed with both her data and action steps the district will implement in order to retain teachers once they are recruited.

Candidates who successfully complete the year-long academy are endorsed by the TSBA for superintendent positions in the future for which they are a good fit in the state of Tennessee.

Dr. Batson has served 25 years in public education, with 20 years served in Cheatham County serving as teacher, principal and supervisor.
