The Cheatham County School District will be hosting viewing events for students and staff members for the rare total solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21.

The district is currently working on the details and will tentatively have students in the Pleasant View area to view the eclipse.
With 2 minutes and 19 seconds of the total solar eclipse, Cheatham County’s longest view is in the Pleasant View area.

The actual total eclipse — when the moon is directly between the sun and the earth — is expected to begin at around 1:26 p.m.

The day’s schedule may have to be adjusted due to the timing of the eclipse.

Activities are being planned at each location as students wait to view the eclipse. Family members of students are invited to attend the viewing events.

The district is purchasing glasses that are being recommended to wear while viewing the eclipse.

Additional information will be released as the date nears.

Andrea Pewitt, the special education supervisor for the Cheatham County School District, is leaving our district after accepting a faculty position at Lipscomb University.

Pewitt has spent the past 18 years in the district. She began teaching in 1999 at East Cheatham Elementary School and later at West Cheatham Elementary School before being named the special education supervisor in 2011.

Pewitt has been named the Program Director for Lipscomb University’s IDEAL (Igniting the Dream of Education and Access) program.

IDEAL is a two-year program that is designed to encourage and support students ages 18-26 with intellectual disabilities to experience college as their peers do.

IDEAL students take classes, go to sporting events, complete internships, eat in the cafeteria, attend chapel and enjoy just being a college student.

“I am beyond grateful and thankful for this opportunity that will allow me to continue working in the field that I love and to continue working with students who in the past have not been given the opportunity to have a higher education experience,” she said.

She added: “The decision to leave the district that I have called home for my entire career was a difficult one. I am very appreciative of all the faculty and staff who work tirelessly in all of our schools. Cheatham County is on track to accomplish great things. I’ll cherish all the experiences that I was fortunate enough to have while serving the students of Cheatham County.”

As for the Special Education Department, Pewitt believes that the district has been successful in breaking down the silos and creating a more inclusive environment for all students.

She hopes that the district will continue with creating environments that allow all students to experience success.
Harpeth Middle School counselor Mike Parsley will replace Pewitt.

PictureMorris and Diane Stevens
Sycamore Middle School has had a long history of having a high-quality band.

While many educators have helped maintain the band through the years, the person who built the program was Morris Stevens.

The Cheatham County School Board voted Monday, June 5 to name the SMS Band Room as the “Morris and Diane Stevens Band Room” in honor of Mr. Stevens and his late wife.

Mr. Stevens has committed his life to music education in Middle Tennessee, teaching in Columbia, Clarksville, Trevecca University, Vanderbilt University and ending his career at SMS.

He served on the Executive Committee of the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, where he provided opportunities for students across the state to participate in a festival environment and to get feedback from some of the nation’s most renowned music educators.

With his help, the events continue today, including the MTSBOA Concert Performance Assessment, where there are more than 10 full days of performances by the bands of Middle Tennessee.

He was also essential in the creation of the Austin Peay State University Concert Festival, where students have the opportunity to meet and work with prominent conductors.
