The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) recruited the help of Cheatham County Schools to produce its bus safety public service announcement (PSA). Transportation director, Cal Blacker, said, “We are very excited to work with the THP to produce this PSA to help bring awareness to highway safety in relation to school buses and students.” The video will feature THP Colonel Tracy Trott and students from Ashland City Elementary. Blacker added that THP officials were pleased with the look and feel of Ashland City Elementary. “Colonel Trott was extremely complimentary of our facilities and cooperation.” According to officials, the PSA will focus on bus safety for all cars surrounding buses in regular traffic situations. Through this production, the community will be educated on proper procedures when encountering a bus with illuminated caution lights and an executed stop sign. The Cheatham County School District, with the cooperative efforts of Centerstone and Centerstone Research Institute (CRI), was recently awarded a $5 million ($5,000,000) grant over the next five years from the United States Department of Education to implement Project Prevent – Cheatham County. The program will address the needs of students exposed to pervasive violence, ensure a safer school environment, and break the cycle of violence by expanding the district’s capacity to develop and implement school-based prevention, counseling, and treatment services. Project Prevent – Cheatham County is one of 22 projects that were funded nationally.
Shelley Mayo, program director and Cheatham County coordinated school health supervisor said, “The funding from this grant will give us the resources to provide access to a full continuum of school and community-based prevention, intervention, and counseling services. It also will increase our capacity to serve students exposed to pervasive violence.” Jeff Bennett, district communications director and grant writer added, “Our students are the heart and soul of everything we do. We are very happy to have opportunities, like Project Prevent, to meet these ever-growing needs in our community.” Project Prevent – Cheatham County will begin this school year. Pinnacle Bank (Ashland City) donated a coffee maker and coffee gift basket to the Cheatham County School District. Jeff Bennett, communications director, said, "We are grateful for our community partners, like Pinnacle Bank, who always bring a smile to our faces." According to Mary Miller, Response to Intervention (RTI) coordinator, the coffee maker will be a kind gesture to our volunteers and teachers who read to our students. As part of the district's RTI initiative, each elementary school contains a reading room to help improve student proficiencies in reading/language arts. |
