The Cheatham County Reading Council hosted its "Celebrate Literacy" reception and awards ceremony on May 11.

The event recognized Cheatham County student authors who entered their original books in the Tennessee Reading Association Elizabeth Brashears book writing competition.

Forty-nine students from the county entered the competition. Charles Wallace and Martha West handed out the awards.  Author Dawn Young, a retired Cheatham County educator, was the guest speaker.

Tamara Retchless, Stephanie Gottschalk, Claudette Fizer and Joyce Bell helped to prepare refreshments and decorations.
The event was held in the Cheatham County Board Annex room. It was a packed house, and everyone had an enjoyable time.

Some of those in attendance were Mary Truka and her husband. Truka is the president of the Tennessee Reading Association. Melanie Collins, Tennessee Reading Association's District Coordinator for Middle Tennessee, and May Lingner, director of the Cheatham County Public Library, also attended.
