Completing the FAFSA is a requirement to be eligible for any federal grants and loans that are available for college students. The information from the FAFSA helps colleges and universities know best how to advise you on paying for tuition.
The first step in filling out the FAFSA is to apply for a PIN number. You can do this now by visiting the PIN Application Website. You must have a PIN before you can begin applying for Federal Student Aid.
The FAFSA application process opened January 1. If you haven’t received your income statements yet, don’t worry. You can make estimates based on last year’s tax returns. It is important to complete this as soon as possible. Some of the funds available are limited, and are distributed on a first-come first-serve basis.
Some individuals have found it easier to complete the FAFSA on paper using the FAFSA Worksheet before completing the online application. This worksheet is designed to help you gather the necessary documents to help you complete the online form. (Please note, this step is optional; you can go straight to the FAFSA website to apply if you prefer.)
Submit the FAFSA by visiting: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Make sure you go to the .gov website as there are several unauthorized websites that charge a fee to "help" you with the process. The fafsa.ed.gov site is ALWAYS FREE!
